Mississippi Business Makes Larger Impact With Smaller Footprint

Earthcare Incorporated, a Gulfport, Mississippi based medical waste management company, has implemented an eco-friendly, non-incinerator based process for medical waste management and transportation. The company anticipates the new process will alter the way local health care providers choose to manage their medical waste.

Unlike incineration, which releases greenhouse gases and cancer-causing dioxin, mercury, heavy metals and other pollutants, Earthcare’s medical waste management process avoids the production of these environmentally harmful by-products. They accomplish this by safely transporting discarded medical waste to processing plants that employ rotating autoclaves, which are the benchmark for contemporary medical waste management. In doing so, the company sees itself as a partner in the effort to leave smaller environmental footprints.

Earthcare Inc., locally owned and operated, was established in 2009 to provide cost-efficient and environmentally friendly medical waste management services to health care providers. To learn more about the company you can visit them on the web at www.earthcareinc.biz or reach by telephone at (228) 234-1852.

Grace Healthcare Goes Red! Will You?

Women’s health is a priority for Grace Healthcare. That is why we support the American Heart Association’s "Go Red For Women" initiative. The “Go Red For Women” initiative seeks to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women. It is difficult to overstate the challenges women face in their struggle for heart health. What may come as a surprise to many of you is that, according to “Go Red For Women,” cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women, claiming nearly 500,000 women yearly in the United States. Those numbers should underscore the importance of the battle against cardiovascular disease, a battle which will require an extraordinary and collective effort to win.

That is why we urge everyone to attend the American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women” event. The Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS will be hosting the “Go Red For Women” seminar and luncheon on Friday, February 3rd, 2012 from 7:30 am-2 pm. This event features “informational and informative speakers, breakout sessions, health screenings, and a fabulous lunch!” But, if you plan to participate in the health screenings be sure to fast the night before! We hope to see you there. And we hope you all will lend a hand in the fight against cardiovascular disease in women!

Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality Pushes "Sharps Initiative"

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is promoting a recent but overlooked initiative, The Household Medical Sharps Disposal Program.  The initiative strives to protect garbage collection employees, sewage treatment plant workers, janitors and the general public from discarded syringes, generally referred to as “sharps.”

According to data released by the Coalition for Safe Community Needle Disposal, the U.S. populace discards 7.8 billion used needles outside of the traditional healthcare setting. In Mississippi, MDEQ estimates 90,000 Mississippians self-administer nearly 30 million injections for a variety of medical conditions. Common means of disposal such as placing sharps in the trash or flushing them down toilets expose the general public and workers to health risks from potential needle stick injuries.

Now, via MDEQ’s Local Drop-Off Collection Program, home syringe users can safely and easily dispose of their used sharps at local community drop-off collection stations. Many local businesses and governments such as pharmacies and fire stations have begun to allow people to drop off their used sharps with them, usually at no cost for the home user.
